Robinhood – Introduction
Robinhood has become a dominant force in the investing industry – offering commission free trades to its users, the ability to trade options and even crypto currency, and more. It’s also gained a lot of negative press as well, for people “betting it all” on hot stocks and options.
The app bills itself as the future of money (both investing and banking) – with $0 trades, a fancy smartphone app, and a bunch of fancy investment-backers that would make it the envy of any Wall Street firm.
But as a customer and investor, is it’s commission-free trading platform worth it? Should you give it a try as an investor?
Here are my honest thoughts on Robinhood. If you want to skip the Robinhood review, the bottom line is that there are better free alternatives for long term investors.
We recommend Fidelity and TD Ameritrade because they both offer $0 commission-free trades, $0 minimum IRAs and are full service. They are a better solution because they offer many more tools and resources for the long term. And they both have great apps.

What Is Robinhood?
Robinhood is an app-based investing platform (it also has banking options) that is commission-free. It is a tech-based start-up that has been focused on changing the investment game.
And, honestly, it’s been working. Robinhood made a name for itself by offering $0 commissions on stock, ETF, and options trading. When it first was launched, this was unheard of. However, today, almost every major stock broker offer $0 commissions and no fees.
So, how do they compare today? Honestly, there are becoming more of a novelty for young traders than a true investment platform for the long term – and most users will likely be better served elsewhere.
But if you’re interested in Robinhood, here’s what you need to know.
Robinhood offers the following main options:
- Commission-free investing for stocks, ETFs, and options
- Commission-free limited cryptocurrency trading
- Fractional Share Investing
- They offer a premium subscription called Robinhood Gold that offers low-priced margin trading
- Robinhood Cash Management – which is a cash management account with a debit card
How Does Robinhood Work?
Fees Under Robinhood
Robinhood advertises free commissions for all U.S.-listed securities, including stocks, options, ETFs and cryptocurrencies. This policy does not extend beyond the borders of America, though, as foreign-listed securities call for a $50 fee per trade. Also, if you make a trade via an over-the-phone broker, you’ll be charged a per-trade rate of $10.
It does not charge you for inactivity, nor does it charge fees for adding or withdrawing money to or from your account. (It is able to afford this because the company’s business model generates revenue from third-party brokers each time you make a trade, profiting off of what’s known as the bid/ask spread to the tune of $0.01 or less per share traded.) It offers margin trading for users who sign up for Robinhood Gold. This service costs $5 per month, and margin loans start at a 5% interest rate.
There is no minimum amount of investable assets necessary to become a customer of Robinhood, nor is there a certain account size you need to maintain to retain your eligibility. Initially, funding your account is also free. Should you need to make an outgoing transfer down the road, that will run you a steep $75 fee. Because it is a web-based firm, Robinhood does not charge for electronic statements. Those who prefer paper statements and trade confirmations will have to pay a $5 and $2 fee, respectively.
Despite the claim of a free-trade policy, fees have been an issue for Robinhood. In December 2020 the Securities and Exchange Commission said one of “Robinhood’s selling points to customers [between 2015 and late 2018] was that trading was ‘commission free,’ but due in large part to its unusually high payment for order flow rates, Robinhood customers’ orders were executed at prices that were inferior to other brokers’ prices.” Robinhood agreed, without admitting or denying the SEC findings, to a cease-and-desist order and to a $65 million civil penalty.
Regardless of Robinhood’s fee schedule, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) charge their own fees for stock transactions. The SEC charges $13 for every $1 million of principal (rounded to the nearest penny). FINRA charges $0.000119 per share (rounded to the nearest penny) with a max of $5.95.
Robinhood Services & Features
Robinhood Gold is Robinhood’s premium service that’s available for an extra fee, though your first 30 days are free. This opens a multitude of benefits to customers, such as increased buying power by borrowing from Robinhood, extended trading hours, larger instant deposits and instant access to funds following the sale of stocks. For customers who borrow under $50,000, there’s just a single monthly fee. If you borrow more than $50,000, you will incur a sizable 5% APR.
In an effort to keep up with modern investing trends, Robinhood has created a cryptocurrency service called Robinhood Crypto. This provides a convenient way for customers to invest in digital currencies like Bitcoin. Similar to the rest of its products, this service holds steady on $0 commissions and instant access to your money.
Successful investors keep investing, which gives Robinhood an incentive to educate their customer base. Robinhood’s website features a robust set of articles and other content that can help to make you more knowledgeable about its services, specific investment types, investing strategies and more. Of course, you can also consult a financial advisor for investment advice.
Robinhood Online Experience
Robinhood has its roots in the mobile investing sphere, but the firm quickly realized that it would need an online platform as well. In 2017, the firm released this service in an effort to mimic its already successful mobile apps, creating another way that customers could look at their account and buy investments. Your online account includes a number of perks that are aimed to make the purchase process simpler and more data-based.
For example, you can view series of stocks that Robinhood aptly calls “collections.” These are organized into some unique categories — those helmed by female CEOS, for example, or those in the entertainment sphere. The app allows you to purchase stocks and other investments. It also maintains the ability to access in-depth investment information, like past performance charts, news, average prices and the aforementioned “collections.”
Robinhood Customer Support
Unfortunately, Robinhood doesn’t offer much in terms of customer service. In fact, it doesn’t operate a phone support line and has no physical locations. This severely limits the response speed of the firm. The nearest offering for direct support is Robinhood’s ticket service, which you can find in its online help center. This is meant to be a last resort, though, as the firm provides content and troubleshooting strategies to help you figure out things on your own.
Who is Robinhood best for?
Margin traders
If you’re interested in margin trading, you can upgrade to Robinhood Gold. You’ll have access to $5,000-$50,000, depending on your account balance at the time you make a deposit into your Robinhood account.
If you use more than $1,000 of margin, you’ll pay 5% yearly interest on the amount you use above $1,000.
New investors
As a newbie investor, I found the interface very easy to use. I loved that I didn’t have to make a minimum commitment to start investing. I didn’t have to invest at all. It freed me up to try the platform out before I made my first small investment.
Market researchers
With Robinhood, you can learn as you invest. The tools make it easy to research the stock market and various investments. I especially love the podcast, which lets me catch up on the latest financial news while I’m doing other things.
How To Get Started With Robinhood!
How To Get Started With Robinhood
The first thing I noticed at signup was that Robinhood is offering free stock to every new member. I didn’t even have to deposit any money!
Robinhood promises a one in 150 chance of getting a high-value stock like Facebook, Microsoft, or Johnson & Johnson for free.
The signup was easy. I just provided my name and email address and set a password. I was then directed to a page requesting my mailing address. This information is required by the federal government when signing up consumers to new financial accounts.
Next, you’ll have to provide your Social Security number. As with your address, this information is required by federal law.
Robinhood also asks for your level of investment experience. I chose “None” because I consider myself a beginner, but you can also choose from:
- Not much.
- I know what I’m doing.
- I’m an expert.
To continue, you’ll need to deposit some money. There’s no charge to move money in and out of Robinhood, and you don’t have to invest any of that money. There is no minimum requirement to fund your account, but insurance only covers up to $500,000.
Next, you’ll need to choose your bank account from the list and log into it to make the connection. My bank account wasn’t on the list, so I had to submit a request for approval before I could proceed.
If Robinhood can’t process your information based on the data you’ve provided through this process, you’ll have to upload a photo of your most recent government-issued I.D. to set up an account.
Setting Up The Robinhood App
Robinhood does everything through it’s smartphone app. Even if you sign up on their website at Robinhood.com, you still have to download their app.
Once I signed up on the website, I received an email with a link to download the Robinhood app. I followed the link and got started.
Once I downloaded the Robinhood App for my iPhone, I opened it up. After you login with your information, it asks you to create a Watchlist.
I didn’t really understand what was even happening at this point – I seriously just entered my login information and it started populating a Watchlist. I wish it didn’t do that (and you don’t have a choice to skip it that I saw).
The next screen asks if you want Smart Notifications for the app. I opted out of this because I hate notifications on my iPhone. I’m sure others will find this feature useful though:
The next screen asks you to fund your account. Out of every app I have ever used, this has been the most intuitive part of the process. I find linking bank accounts can be a challenge, even on a desktop computer, but Robinhood made this easy.
Once your account is funded, you’ll receive a confirmation email and an alert on the iPhone app. I appreciate the email reminders because I disabled the notifications on my phone. Here’s what your account screen looks like:
However, before I could do anything else, Robinhood once again asked me to setup a bunch of investment objectives. I didn’t really understand the purpose of these, as they don’t seem to have any software or help to customize a portfolio or trade.
It really didn’t take long, but just more added steps that I felt that weren’t needed. It was all pretty standard stuff, but seemed like a robo-advisor:
How To Use The Robinhood App
Now that you have your account funded, you can start using the Robinhood App to look up and trade stocks.
They have some very elegant ways to look up stock information. Here’s what I started with, looking up Abbott Labs (ABT). Once you look up the stock symbol, it gives you a quote, basic chart, and other basic information about the stock.
This is all trading information – they don’t have any fundamental information about the company:
Before you can make a trade, Robinhood does have this cool feature that lets you look at “Popular Stocks” based on what others are doing on their app.
While I don’t like to base my investment decision on what others are doing, a little voyeurism is always fun:
When I went to make my first trade, I thought I’d keep it simple and just invest in SPY. So, I typed in the symbol for SPY and got a quote.
I then clicked the big Buy button on the screen and it brought me to the order screen. It’s very intuitive and easy to use to place an order. You simply type in the shares you want to buy and the price. If you don’t want a market order, you can tap the “Market” and switch it to a limit order.
After that, you review your order. Then, you just swipe up to submit. Personally, I hate having to swipe to access features on a phone. Just let me push a button.
Robinhood Gold
Robinhood Gold is their premium product. You can get access to gold starting at $5 per month.
Robinhood Gold gives you:
- Margin Trading: They call this feature “Gold Buying Power”, but honestly it’s just 2x margin on your account. However, unlike other margin accounts, you don’t pay interest. Your margin power is based on the flat monthly fee you’ll pay
- Pre & After Hours Trading: You can get access to pre market and after hours trading
- Bigger Instant Deposits: You can get instant access to your money, including when you sell a security, you don’t have to wait the few days for the settlement(they call this “Instant Reinvestment”)
- Level II Market Data and Pro Research: You can get access to more information and research than on the standard level.
Here’s where it gets tricky. The pricing for all of this is pretty high in my opinion. Of course, this is always subject to change (and please let us know in the comments if it does change):
Robinhood Cash
After stumbling to launch their cash account, Robinhood now offers a cash management account with a solid APY that’s competitive to the top high yield savings accounts out there.
The account currently pays you 0.30% APY. Like all variable rates, this could go up or down over time.
The account has no minimum requirements, no monthly fee, no overdraft fee, and comes with a Mastercard debit card to easily access your money at their huge network of fee-free ATMs.
The only drawbacks with this account are that they don’t reimburse other ATM fees, and you do have to use their app. However, if you’re good with those conditions, enjoy a great cash management product.
How They Make Money
I’m always leery when I see a company offering something for nothing. This company isn’t a non-profit. It’s venture backed and will be looking to go public and make people rich. But, in order to do so, they need to make money, so how do they do it? They break it down here.
They have two models. First, they sell your information to third party companies. This is a big revenue generator for them, but it does have the potential to cost individual investors money on trades. You can read more about it in this article.
Second, they have their Robinhood Gold account, which you do pay a subscription for to have access to things like margin trading.
For the long term investor, these don’t really matter. Paying $0.01 more (potentially) per share shouldn’t impact a long-term buy and hold investor. However, if you’re a trader (which Robinhood’s platform isn’t geared towards), this could be costly.
Robinhood Features
Robinhood is one of many great apps out there that make trading easy. Here are some features that set Robinhood apart.
Easy-to-use interface
One of the biggest selling points of Robinhood is its mobile app. You can see, at a glance, how each of your investments is performing. With just a few taps on your screen, you can purchase or sell an asset.
No commissions on trades
Robinhood makes its money in a variety of ways:
- Selling trades to different firms
- Robinhood Gold, a suite of powerful investing tools, which starts at $5 a month
- Rebates from market makers and trading venues
- Income generated from cash
- Stock loan income from counterparties
- Interchange fees from purchases made with the Cash Management debit card, and fees from program banks
This is a common practice among online brokers and means that you, the investor, can trade without commissions and fees.
Cryptocurrency trading available
If you’re interested in dipping your toe in the pond of cryptocurrency investing, Robinhood can help. Using their platform, you can trade Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin, and more.
Watchlists
Before making a decision about whether to invest in a stock, it can help to monitor it for a while. Robinhood makes it easy by letting you add assets to a watchlist. Simply search for a stock by name and tap the Add symbol. Then you can keep an eye on it while you decide whether to make a move.
News and market monitoring
As soon as I started investing, I became intensely interested in what the markets were doing. Robinhood provides a newsfeed to help me keep up with the news directly in the app.
There’s also a newsletter and podcast, called Daily Snacks, that provides news in an accessible, easy-to-understand format.
Alerts and notifications
Set up notifications so that you’ll know as soon as there’s significant activity on your account. You customize these notifications in the app’s settings. Set your preferences for Dividends, Bank Transfers, Orders, and Price Movements.
My experience using Robinhood
After signup, I was given a Robinhood Instant Account, which is a margin account. New members start here and can upgrade to higher tiers as they get comfortable with the platform. The Instant option is free to use, with no commissions charged on the amount you trade. You also aren’t required to keep a minimum amount in the account.
I was struck right away with the app’s easy-to-use, visually-appealing interface. You can see, at a glance, where your investments stand. Create a watchlist to keep an eye on stocks you’re considering buying. This has been a big help in deciding where I want to put my investment dollars. There have been a couple of instances where I held off on investing in a particular asset after seeing it drop in value on my Robinhood dashboard.
As I get more comfortable with Robinhood, I’m starting to see the value of Robinhood Gold. But it’s a commitment. Gold members pay $5 a month for a subscription but have access to bigger trades. With Robinhood Gold, you’re buying on margin, which means I’d be investing my money along with a loan amount from Robinhood. Robinhood lets you set limits to keep your risk at a minimum, but there’s always a bit of risk with this type of investing.
Right now, I’m enjoying what I’m getting from Robinhood Instant, but I’ll keep an eye on the other available options and continue considering an upgrade.
Robinhood Pros and Cons

- Funds aren’t automatically reinvested — I liked the fact that my dividends were credited to my account, but some would prefer to have the option to reinvest them.
Final Thoughts
Robinhood has set themselves up as a game-changing mobile-first brokerage. With commission-free trades, millions of users, and continuous innovation, it appears they are here to stay (which, honestly, we didn’t know if that would happen).
If you’re looking to get started investing with a small amount of cash, then Robinhood should be a broker you check out.
It’s hard to go wrong when you’re investing with no fees and no minimum obligation. But if you’re serious about getting started on building a portfolio, it can help to choose the right platform from the start.
